We are all apprehensive about our boilers breaking down, especially when we need them most in the winter. The furnace is what supplies us with hot water for every single task in the house: taking a bath or a shower, washing dishes, etc. During the winter when the temperature is frigid, we should not neglect the state of our boiler as otherwise, we will end up with cold water for everything in the coldest months of the year and will need boiler repairs that will set us back a considerable amount of money – we don’t want that to happen. Here are some tips on how we can take care of our boilers during the winter.
Keep the pressure steady
If the pressure is too low, the boiler will not work correctly. Maintain the right pressure so that you won’t encounter unexpected issues, especially during the winter.
Get the boiler cleaned
Contact a plumbing professional to clean your boiler before winter sets in. Sludge, muck and debris can accumulate in the pipes, and they affect the efficiency of its performance. Although it may sound a simple thing to do to clean your boiler’s pipes, it is actually a tedious task that only a professional plumber can efficiently perform.
Check the radiator
Over time, air gets trapped inside the boiler’s radiator. Get a screwdriver and twist the purging valve you can find on the majority of radiators to get rid of the trapped air & get a bucket ready to catch any water that might flow when you release it. Twist the valve carefully and wait for the hissing sound from the radiator; as soon as the hissing sound stops, close the lid. Doing this regularly will keep the radiator functioning properly, as trapped air may cause uneven warmth throughout the house.
Check the pipes for cracks and holes
You don’t want to discover a leak during the winter, as it will affect the boiler’s performance or its ability to provide warmth in your entire home. Take a close look at the pipes and if there are any cracks or leaks take note of them. Relay your findings to the plumber and let them take over, as they will know the best solution to give your unit.
Turn on the heat even on hot days
You may neglect your boiler when it is warm and toasty, and you feel that there is no need to turn it on, thinking that you will save on your consumption. But turning it on once in a while even during hot days will prepare it for the coming winter months. Doing so will ensure that the boiler will be free from grit that will affect its performance.
These things are not hard to perform. If you notice that anything is amiss with your boiler, contact a reputable plumbing company right away so they can take a look at your unit and suggest the best solutions to restore it in good running condition again.
