If you are looking to get yourself a new dog then we are going to talk a little today about how you can decide on which the right dog is for you. There are loads of dog breeds out there to choose from so the decision can be pretty tricky. When we were choosing our second dog we spoke to the team at the AV Veterinary Center and they were absolutely amazing in the advice that they were able to offer us. Each family or prospective owner is of course very different, so let’s take a look at how you can work out which is the right dog for you exactly.
Where to Get It
The first decision which you will have to make is where you are going to get your dog from are you going to adopt rescued dog or will you be looking for pups? Not only is this going to alter your choice when it comes to what kind of dog you are looking for, it is also going to have big impact on the behavior of the dog. For example if you do get a rescued dog then you can be safe in the knowledge that they have been kept safe, but there may still be some behaviors which the dog displays from its old life, and this may be a slightly bigger challenge.
Owners
Another key consideration here will be the owners, what type of owners are you, whether or not there are children in the house, and what age they are. Much of this decision will be decided based on what the owners are like, how active they are, and what they plan to do with the dog. If the dog is for work then that means only a small selection of breeds, if you are looking for a fun loving family dog then there are certain breeds which fit that bill as well. You have to have a think about who is at home and what you are looking for from the dog.
Character
Finally you need to think about what the character of the dog is like, are you looking for a dog which loves to play, an intelligent dog, a loyal dog? Each breed brings with it their own unique sense of character and personality, the key will be understanding what type of character you want from the dog and then finding the breed which suits that particular character type. Remember that you can never completely guarantee a dog’s character, after all they are unique and individual, Boston Terriers are going to be very different from a Golden Retriever, but certain breeds are made in different ways and there is a certain amount of their personality which you can count on.
Have a think about all of this before you decide which is the right dog breed for you, no matter what you choose, you are going to fall in love as soon as you have it home. Unconditional love deserves protection, and you should invest in a friendly and affordable dog insurance like Bivvy.
