What songs changed your life? do you have any? This was a question posed to me by musical genius and good friend of mine Stephen Varanko III. As you can imagine the question did throw me somewhat but having had some time to reflect on it, I have picked out just a handful of songs which had such a profound impact on my life that they potentially altered its course. Take a look and feel free to let me know what songs changed your life.
Beat It
When I was 7 years old I had a cassette tape with Micheal Jackson’s Bad on one side and Thriller on the other, apparently I wouldn’t go to sleep unless it was playing which meant my Mum having to carry the tape everywhere. I can still remember hearing the drums kick in and that funky rhythm being played as Michael’s aggression and funk burst through the record. Finally that Van Halen guitar solo just blows me away and I get as excited listening to it today as I did back then.
Local Boy in the Photograph
The Stereophonics are probably my favorite band of all time and the song which started this love affair was Local Boy in the Photograph. The story recounts a tale of a boy from a small village who took his own life, coming from a small village this resonated with me a lot. This will forever be my favorite ‘Phonics song and it still makes me skin tingle when I see it performed live, despite having already seen it on over 15 occasions.
Lodi Dodi
Lodi Dodi, as I now know, was originally performed by Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh, the first version that I heard however was on Snoop Doggy Dogg’s ‘Doggystyle’ and it blew me away. I was 12 when I first listened to this, we were on a Scout trip and someone had managed to ‘acquire’ these expletive-laden album. This song was my first introduction to cursing and to speaking about the vices of gang life, and I loved it!
Sweet Disposition
Sweet Disposition by the Temper Trap originally featured on a Sky advert which was where I first saw it, wrongly assuming at that time that it was simply a musical fill. Less than one month later I went to a festival in Ireland and this song came on the radio when we first arrived, a beautiful and breathtaking song. As it happened the Temper Trap were playing the festival, at the same time as the World Cup Final as it happened, and I missed the first half just to wait for that song, and it didn’t disappoint.
These are the four songs that first came to mind when thinking of what to put in the category of ‘life changing’ and there are of course many more which I could put with it. What would your life changing tracks be?
