How Sibanthracite Group is Fueling Russia’s Coal Industry Dominance

November 13, 2019 by Ian Leave a Comment

Sibanthracite Group is ranked first in the production and export of UHG anthracite throughout the world and is the largest producer of metallurgical coal at the domestic level. Sibanthracite Group is one of the most dynamically developing coal companies in Russia. The coal production amounted to 6 million tonnes in 2014, and 24.1 million tonnes in 2018.

A new league table published in November by RBC Magazine ranks Dmitry Bosov-owned Sibanthracite Group as Russia’s fastest growing coal company. RBC-rated at 13, it was the only coal company listed on the magazine’s list of Russia’s 50 fastest-growing companies in 2019. Forbes ranked Sibanthracite the third-fasted growing privately-owned Russian company in any sector in a league table published in October.

The primary reason for Sibanthracite’s “dynamic growth,” according to RBC, is the expansion of its existing mines as well as greenfield developments, investment in its own rail and other infrastructure and fast access to high production rates. Coal production amounted to 6 million tonnes in 2014, and 24.1 million tonnes in 2018. Roughly 85 percent of its production goes to some form of the steel industry while electrodes and chemicals account for other end uses.

An estimated 95 percent of its production is exported, of which three-fourths is made to China, India, Korea, Japan and Vietnam.

Russia is recognized as one of the world’s leading regions for the mining of high-quality anthracite. According to the 2017 Anthracite Market Survey, Russia has become the dominant supplier to world markets over the past few years. It has made inroads into the European market since 2014 when conflict disrupted production in eastern Ukraine. It ranks now as the third-largest supplier to the seaborne market, behind Indonesia and Australia, according to a recent Reuters report.

Other factors, such as its central geographic location, which make its transportation costs more competitive than other European coal exporters, as well as favorable environmental fuel regulations, such as IMO 2020, further position Russia to dominate the coal industry.

Russia’s strategic moves that are establishing the region as the leader of coal exploration.

Positioning Sibanthracite Group to continue to outpace the competition are such initiatives as the Port Vera project, which will increase port capacity and significantly increase the ability of Russian companies to transport high-quality metallurgical coal to the Far East.

Sibanthracite Group is the world leader in the production and export of UHG anthracite and metallurgical coal. As one of the fastest-growing coal companies in Russia, it continues to outpace the competition. In 2018, Sibanthracite produced 24.1 million tonnes of coal and anthracite, and they plan to double production over the next two years.
