Responsibilities
The first symptom is when you see a person neglecting a lot of their responsibilities at home, school, or work. This means that their performance will be very poor and they might be late all of the time. This will eventually lead to failures, frequent absences, and accidents on the job. The person will be more than likely to become distant with all of their family and friends.
Therefore, they will begin to break a lot of the promises that they made to their loved ones. If it is the case of a functional alcoholic, they still might be able to do a lot of heavy drinking and still fulfil all of their responsibilities. But on the inside, this person will be very exhausted and frantic since it will take a lot of effort for them to be able to keep up with the appearances that they have to do. There are several different alcohol withdrawal symptoms that can be very serious.
Stress
The second symptom is when you notice that the person is drinking as a way to get away from some of the stress that is going on in their life. Most of the time, when a person is addicted to alcohol, then that is how the person will be able to relax. They will turn to alcohol so that they can get their mind off with the conflicts and challenges in their life.
Basically, the alcohol will help them to banish the negative emotions and cope with the stress. This is how the person will try to forget about their problems. Even though they don’t realize that they are actually disconnecting from their problems. Therefore, they will not be able to deal with their problems in the end. In other words, the problems will only get worse over time and they will begin to drink even more with the more problems that come their way.
Depression
The third symptom is that the person will be depressed. A lot of people will drink to self-medicate the depression, but if the person drinks on a regular basis, then it can cause the depression to get worse. This is because it can interfere with the brain’s natural response to pleasure. This means that the person who is chronically drinking will not be able to enjoy their life with the alcohol in it. Therefore, occasional drinking will lead to even more drinking. This will make the symptoms of depression even worse as the person continues to drink more and more.
Anxiety
The fourth symptom is when the person has a lot of anxiety. When a person first starts to drink, the alcohol will help to soothe their anxiety. This is because it can depress a person’s central nervous system. But then as the person continues to drink more and more, the alcohol will have a rebound effect to it. This means that the person’s nervous system will become very active. Therefore, the anxiety will only be relieved if the person does even more drinking.
Mood
The fifth symptom is when the person is going through a lot of mood swings. This is because alcohol will cause the person to have a shift in their mood. But if a person continues to drink, then it will change the structure and chemical processes that are inside of the brain. This can disrupt the emotional response that normally happens in the brain. Therefore, a person will be a lot more irritable and will quickly get angry. Most of the time, you will know why the person is having such a big change in their mood. Even though the alcoholic will find something to blame for the change in their behaviour as a way of justifying the dramatic shifts in their mood.
Relationships
The sixth symptom is that you will notice that the person will have a lot of problems in their relationships with other people. This will happen because of all of the ups and downs that will go on while the person is drinking. Therefore, there will be a lot of conflicts between the loved ones of the alcoholic and that person. Most of the time, the person will have a lot of behaviour that is hurtful and uncharacteristic to their loved ones. This means that drinking can damage the relationship and create a lot of pain and distrust in the relationship.
Legal
The last symptom is when the person is having a lot of legal problems. More than likely, this will happen because the person will be driving while they are drinking or engaging in fights while drunk. But it could also be a problem if the person is spending a lot of money on alcohol instead of paying their bills, so they could commit crimes in order to pay bills.
