When Should a Female Start Seeing a Gynecologist?

April 25, 2021 by Ian Leave a Comment

Gynecologists specialize in female reproductive health.

Women worldwide make their maiden visits to the gynecologist at different ages and for various reasons.

If you are a young woman or a parent with daughters, you might wonder when the best time to see a gynecologist in Montreal is. Well, read about that here, learn why the first visit is essential, and what to expect.

The First Visit

Health practitioners often advise young girls to make their first gynecological visit between 13 and 15 years old.

Unless the girl has any specific concerns to discuss or be checked out further by the gynecologist, the visit is typically non-intrusive.

Most girls will not require a pelvic exam at this stage. Nonetheless, the gynecologist will carry out a health exam and discuss her reproductive health with the patient.

What to Expect

The young lady can also talk about her period and any concerns or questions they might have. If the teenager is sexually active, they might be more comfortable discussing that with the gynecologist than their parents.

Good gynecologists will try and create a good rapport with younger clients as this tends to be the only way they can open up about their problems now and in the future. Part of the visit will require the parent to be outside so the girl and the doctor can speak freely.

It’s important to let your daughter know that no physical exam will be internal unless the doctor notes anything of concern. This should help allay their fears.

Topics of Discussion

This visit being largely conversational will see the gynecologist discuss a few important matters with the patient.

Those that feature prominently during this visit include:

Menstruation

The doctor will ask if the patient has begun menstruating. If they have, the doctor will want to know how heavy or light the flow is, the pain level, and the general experience.

If the girl has not started growing breasts and has not had her period by 14 years of age, the gynecologist will seek to probe this further.

Sexual health

There are numerous touchpoints under the sexual umbrella. The nature of this will depend on whether or not the teenager is sexually active.

If they are, the doctor can talk to them about practicing safe sex, contraception, STI’s and what to look out for.

If one is not sexually active, they can still touch on what is normal and what is not regarding the female reproductive system. The HPV vaccine can also be brought up at this point.

There You Have It

Teenagers need to make their first visit to a gynecologist as they approach the early years of young womanhood.

This ensures they get the correct information right from the beginning and learn how to take care of their health from the right person- a gynecologist.
