Most of us consider our homes a haven – somewhere we can relax and be ourselves and spend precious bonding time with our families and friends. So naturally, we want to make our homes as pleasant as possible, with a cosy atmosphere that facilitates warmth and openness. But in the same vein, we want to do our utmost to protect our homes – to keep them safe from any intruders and everyone inside secure. The good news is there are various measures you can take advantage of to keep everyone within your premises safe and secure, and they don’t have to feel like they are in gaol, either. Here are the top ways you can enhance the security of your property.
- Give your locks a security upgrade
Often, it’s simply a matter of giving your locks an upgrade. The locks are one of the most critical aspects affecting your home’s security. If you are moving into a new house, experts say that it is better if you change the locks just to be safe and sure. But apart from this, check the kind of locks fitted on your property’s back and front doors; we recommend setting up mortice locks, which are more secure than most and require keys to open the door. Also, add door chains and deadbolts for added security.
At the same time, don’t forget that windows need to be safe and secure, too – as you may know, windows offer the weakest resistance to intruders, who are more likely to enter through a window rather than a door. Most modern windows are already outfitted with locks – but if they are dated, you should inspect the windows’ locks to ensure they are still secure. You could also add window bars.
- Update your windows
As mentioned, many intruders tend to check the windows first because they are often the weakest entry point. However, if the window frames are old or have cracks, rotting wood, or peeling paint, it may be a good time to update your windows. Steel windows are an excellent choice if you are looking to upgrade your windows, and many steel window manufacturers out there can give you exactly what you want and will follow the strictest specifications. As everyone knows, it is virtually impossible to break steel windows, and you can even double the security by adding metal bars. In addition, steel windows are low-maintenance and protected from corrosion with a powder coating. They also look great with any property, old or new, and can be outfitted with double or single glazing.
- Install CCTVs and outdoor lighting
Another surefire way to protect your property (and everyone in it) is to install CCTVs and outdoor lighting. Many commercial and industrial properties have long used CCTVs for the simple reason that it works! The mere presence of cameras is often enough to deter would-be thieves or intruders. Also, installing motion sensor outdoor lights or timed lighting is another deterrent for intruders and burglars. If used in combination with CCTVs, it will be easy to see any potential intruder lurking in the shadows. Ensure that all the outdoor spaces on your property are well-lit, and trim your shrubs and trees often so intruders won’t have a place to hide.
