When you think of East Yorkshire, you probably picture the seaside — and understandably so, given the many varied, exciting attractions dotted along the county’s 53-mile coastline.
If you are considering holidaying in East Yorkshire and taking the kids with you, take heart that the area has plenty of beaches where your little ones will be able to build sandcastles while you nibble on some fish and chips. However, there’s much more to the East Yorkshire coast than all of that.
For example, you could explore such seaside towns as Hornsea, Withernsea and Bridlington, not to mention channel your inner Sir David Attenborough by watching out for seabirds like razorbills and puffins. Then, of course, there’s the North Sea — an inviting and bracing place to swim.
Still, why limit your East Yorkshire adventures to the coast? You could be pleasantly surprised by how much you find when you head further inland. Here are just a few examples of the delights awaiting you in the county otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire…
Sample some culture
As the city of Hull (or ‘Kingston upon Hull’, to use its full, formal name) is the largest settlement in East Yorkshire, you might already have been intending to spend a large portion of your holiday there. You’ll find plenty of caravan sites in East Yorkshire and near Hull.
One powerful incentive to do so would be the city’s cultural offering. Hull was designated the UK City of Culture for 2017 — but in the here and now, there are many live entertainment venues you can check out in Hull, including the Connexin Live arena where especially big-name acts perform.
Hull also hosts a number of annual festivals — including the Humber Mouth Literature Festival, where poet John Cooper Clarke and actress Miriam Margolyes have appeared. Meanwhile, Pixie Lott and Martha Reeves are among the singers to have performed at the Freedom Festival.
Have a bite to eat
You are bound to feel peckish from time to time during your East Yorkshire stay, so it’s fortunate that the county contains a vast range of eateries.
At one end of the scale are modest pubs, cafes and tearooms — but you might fancy being more adventurous and taking advantage of some fine dining at a prestigious restaurant, especially if you have a romantic partner you hope to spend some special time with.
When on a family outing with kids notorious for getting bored easily, you could satiate their sweet tooth by fetching some ice cream, doughnuts or similar sweet treats from traders’ stalls.
Step back in time
Key to the appeal of a predominantly rural region like East Yorkshire is that, over the years, it will have seen relatively little development compared to major cities. Indeed, visiting many East Riding settlements can leave you feeling as though you have literally stepped back into the past.
Just look at Howden. This market town in the Vale of York is home to Howden Minster, a Grade I listed church built in various stages during the 14th century.
If watching romantic period dramas has left you fascinated by the Georgian period, you could be especially excited about visiting Sledmere House. This Grade I listed country house — located in the village of Sledmere, near Driffield — was largely assembled in the late 18th century.
Reconnect with nature
The renowned artist David Hockney has produced many enchanting paintings depicting the natural scenery of the Yorkshire Wolds, the UK’s northernmost chalk hills. Now, you can see that same scenery for real, such as by following miles of walking trails that snake through the Wolds area.
If you want to witness some nature a little off the beaten track, the port town of Goole has a hidden gem in the form of Oakhill Nature Reserve. Maintained by volunteers, it’s a sanctuary for bird species in danger of dying out elsewhere.
After seeing all of that, why not return to… the coast? It can prove an ideal place to look for caravan sites in East Yorkshire. Next to Bridlington is one such site, North Bay Leisure Park, which offers private static caravans for sale on the east coast of Yorkshire.
With public transport, cycle routes and public footpaths all readily accessible within the local area, it can make a lot of sense for you to purchase one of these caravans so that you will have a comfortable and well-connected abode to keep returning to during your East Yorkshire getaways.
